For example, many fraternities, as well as other groups, manipulate the material self of the pledge in order to create a new identity, one that coincides with the organization. This paper provides evidence for the widespread use of planned failure in fraternities, describing its application in a modern hazing fraternity and presenting evidence of planned failure in other fraternities using interviews and decades of scholarly and non-scholarly accounts of hazing. Greek life enjoys a long and storied connection to higher education. In fact, at some universities, where anywhere between 50–80% of the student population is affiliated with a house, going Greek may even feel like a cultural requirement. Social or general fraternities and sororities, in the North American fraternity system, are those that do not promote a particular profession (as professional fraternities are) or discipline (such as service fraternities and sororities).Instead, their primary purposes are often stated as the development of character, literary or leadership ability, or a more simple social purpose. Furthermore, although many of the negative consequences experienced by Greek members are prevalent among college students (e.g., hangovers, blackouts, unplanned sexual activity, and academic problems), fraternity and sorority members report experiencing these consequences at a much higher rate than do nonmembers (see Table 1).
